Research summary
Cardiovascular Disease is the main cause of death for patients with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). patients with CKD who spend a lot of time being inactive have an increased change of developing cardiovascular disease. Therefore increasing physical activity and exercise for patients with CKD is an important issue.A recent study showed positive results with exercise interventions. When analysing those that did not complete the exercise in this study, 11 of the 18 drop outs were from black and minority ethnic groups. Some patients informed our team that cultural beliefs such as women being comfortable exercising, appropriate dress contributed to withdrawal from the study. This has promoted us to design this current study to explore the cultural influences that may contribute to patients decisions about taking part in physical activity or exercise training in the three most widely represented ethnic groups found in our south-east London hospital trust (Black African and African-Caribbean; South Asian and white Caucasian patients). We will explore cultural beliefs to engage with exercise or physical activity through questionnaires (looking at physical activity levels and readiness to be involved in physical activity), individual face-to-face interviews, and focus groups. We will translate all resources if required, and also have interpreters available for the group discussions. The work from this pilot study will be used to inform and design a larger multi-centre study. We will learn about appropriate ways to recruit and engage patients from different cultures, and whether the pilot study design is appropriate for a larger study.
