Research summary
National healthcare policies state that professionals should take account of cultural identity and provide appropriate healthcare for minority ethnic and religious groups. Professionals may get little practical support to do this, however, and there is very little research evidence about how to meet the needs of specific populations.
This research project aims to measure the impact of a culturally adapted therapy that has been developed to meet the needs of Muslim patients with depression. The approach is based on a mental health therapy called Behavioural Activation and we have used evidence from existing research and practice to produce a guidance manual for therapy and self-help booklet. We will train staff to deliver the culturally adapted therapy and will gather information and feedback on how effective Muslim clients and those involved in delivering the therapy find this treatment.
We will also explore how suitable a faith-sensitive approach would be for other religious communities.
