Research summary
In a Caesarean Scar Pregnancy (CSP) the pregnancy implants in the Caesarean section scar in women with a previous Caesarean section. These are high-risk pregnancies as the muscle tissue in the area of the scar can be very thin and thus CSP can lead to life-threatening bleeding. Many patients undergo termination of pregnancy to prevent severe bleeding complications. Having such a high-risk pregnancy can be traumatic for patients. We plan to conduct an open interview study of women with lived experience of a Caesarean scar pregnancy (CSP) +/- their partners who have been diagnosed and undergone treatment at Liverpool Women’s Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (LWH). Participants will be asked to discuss their personal experience of such a high-risk pregnancy. We aim to investigate what it is like to be diagnosed with this condition, what it is like to be the partner of someone with CSP and explore any recommendations for care for those impacted by CSP.
The benefit of this study is to, firstly, gain a better understanding of how women and their partners are affected by a pregnancy complicated by CSP, and secondly to use this information to develop support services and improve care
To our knowledge, there is no literature describing the lived experience of women and their partners diagnosed with CSP. We aim to interview 10-15 women +/- their support partners. This qualitative interview study will use an interpretive phenomenological analysis (IPA) approach. This method was chosen as the most appropriate methodology because the aim of the study is to explore a specific phenomenon, in this case, the lived experience of CSP.REC name
