  • Data collection arrangements

The Walton CSF Research Biobank (WCRB) collects and stores samples surplus to diagnostic requirements from
neurology patients and healthy volunteers subject to fully informed consent. The samples collected are cerebrospinal fluid (csf), bloods including serum and plasma matched with patient demographics and
clinical history. All the records are held in a secure database in the Walton Centre NHS Trust IT network.
Samples are anonymised by biobank number before being released for research projects. All the research project
applications are peer reviewed by senior clinicians, and researcher members of the WCRB management committee before release to researchers. Samples are also available to researchers outside WCRB but additional external REC ethical approval will be requested.

  • Research programme

The Walton CSF Research Biobank has been established to promote multidisciplinary basic and translational neurology research. Clinicians and basic science researchers in Liverpool and within the North West collaboration are actively engaged in neurology research to investigate molecular biomarkers that may be used to aid diagnosis and predict prognosis in neurological conditions and to gain an increased understanding of the basic biology of these diseases in order to develop better therapies for individual patients. Such research involves analysis of proteins, DNA, RNA, and metabolites from CSF and blood. Comparisons between sample biology, radiological imaging and clinical outcome are an essential component of this research. Our current areas of interest include paraneoplastic autoantibodies and their role in disease, method development to identify bio-markers present in both CSF and blood, the impact of molecular genetics and radiological parameters on outcomes in neurological conditions.
