Research summary
Ulcerative colitis is the most common inflammatory bowel disease. It is a long term disease that is most commonly diagnosed in the second and third decades of life. The majority of patients are managed with medical therapy but between 20 and 30% require surgery to remove the large bowel during their lifetime. After the bowel is removed there are options for further surgery if the patient would like to avoid a permanent stoma (bag). The two options for 'restorative' surgery allow the patient to go to the toilet in the normal fashion but both have different benefits and risks. It is not ethically appropriate to randomise patients to either option and so in this study, patients who are eligible will be given standardised information and allowed to choose between permanent stoma or either of the two restorative options. They will be followed up to record their quality of life, bowel and sexual function up to two years after surgery to compare outcome with each technique.
