Research summary
We are interested to explore and examine the views and ideas of three distinct groups on the perceived cost/benefit analysis of the use of Mycophenolate in patients with a diagnosis of complex regional pain syndrome. We will run focus groups with patients with CRPS who are not currently using the medication, CRPS patients who have completed a period of medication use and a final group of lay individuals with no chronic pain diagnosis and have not had medication. All groups will be provided with information about the drug and the potential risks and benefits in advance of the focus groups. The lay patients will also be asked to complete a questionnaire on the use of this drug in CRPS. We wish to establish whether the context of a pain condition appears to influence the perceived benefits of a potent and immune-suppressing drug in a non-destructive disorder such as chronic pain. This will also help to establish the possibility and suitability of an RCT of mycophenolate in CRPS.
