  • Research summary

This study will examine the impact of a 10 week CrossFit exercise program on the fitness and quality of life of teenage and young adult cancer survivors in Northern Ireland.

CrossFit is constantly varied functional movements performed at high intensity. The aim of CrossFit is to forge broad, general and inclusive fitness that is supported by measurable, observable and repeatable results. CrossFit is scalable and applicable to all members of the population therefore it does not discriminate against condition, ability, experience or level of fitness.

The research study will measure the following physiological measures before and after the 10-week program: Cardiovascular health, lung function, strength, flexibility, body composition, stamina, endurance and speed. The following non-physiological measures will be assessed before and after each 10-week program: quality of life and fatigue.

The research study will require participants to perform specific exercise workouts together in a class format twice a week in a CrossFit facility that is located near the regional treatment hospital. The participants will also be required to complete one home based activity per week. Participants will receive coaching during the group classes and be under the supervision of the researcher (CrossFit Coach).
