  • Research summary

In this project, we will work with people with intellectual disabilities (also called learning disabilities) to help people understand what critical illness and critical care is. This will help people make choices about their health and what they would like to happen to them; this is called advanced care planning. There are currently no Easy Read or accessible information about critical care available on national websites and support groups. For some people, words are very hard to follow and to understand and remember, so we will design different information in different formats. Supporting people in their decision making about their health is a recognised reasonable adjustment to accessing care [27-29]. This is legally required in England [30].
We will co-produce materials in different media (video, easy read etc) to help people with learning disabilities prepare and express their wishes when faced with critical illness and ICU admission. We are undertaking interviews with people with learning disabilities and their carers (Work package 1), workshops with PPI groups to design resources using the data from the interviews (Work package 2) and focus groups (group discussions) for stakeholder engagement and integration of these resources into clinical practice (Work package 3).
