Research summary
In discussion with people with psychotic illnesses, they reported that they were dissatisfied with the mental health services response that they received in a crisis. The caring, empathetic response that people need in these circumstances is sometimes lacking. National studies investigating satisfaction with the care received during a mental health crisis have also highlighted similar issues.
The majority of people with psychotic illness will use a crisis team at some time during their life. Crisis teams provide first response to mental health crisis. If the care offered at this point does not meet the needs of those that use the services, this may result in a worsening of symptoms and disruption to service user’s lives.
Other large studies have attempted to look at various ways of providing an appropriate crisis response for people with psychosis, but they were not successful. The majority for reasons for failure were due to difficulties with clinicians engaging with the new intervention.
We aim to develop an intervention to improve crisis response for people with psychosis. In this study we will conduct initial interviews with service users and staff. The interviews will allow stakeholders to highlight areas of improvement, barriers and suggestions for improvement.
