  • Data collection arrangements

Oxford Health Foundation Trust plans to implement The Case Record Interactive Search (CRIS) system, a search and database assembly program which extracts information from clinical electronic health records (EHR). This clinical data is used for audit, service evaluation and research purposes. Information is extracted from the EHR, patient identifiers removed and the information made available to researchers in an pseudonymised format from a searchable data repository. Pseudonymised data is anonymous to the people who hold or receive it (e.g. a research team), but contains information or codes that would allow others (e.g. those with special approvals in place) to identify an individual from it. The searchable information taken from the EHR in most uses will not identify patients. However under specific circumstances including prior consent by service users, identification of patients for research purposes is possible thereby increasing the opportunity for research participation. Oversight of CRIS will be provided by a CRIS 'Oversight Group' that will monitor and audit CRIS use.

  • Research programme

In OHFT, CRIS will provide a step change in our ability to evaluate healthcare provision. Rather than relying on specific research carried out on selected groups of patients we will be able to evaluate outcomes of healthcare interventions on all patients in OHFT regardless of demographic group. This will contribute to pragmatic research, which is more like the 'real world' and will make sure our services are targeted at the needs of all patients. CRIS does this by transforming our ability to carry out large scale effectiveness and audit across all patient groups in real time using representative samples and highly efficient systems. It will drive down the cost of research and will make our service fully evidence based. This is already proven to be the case in those Trusts who have implemented CRIS including South London Maudsley where they have already provided a number of high impact papers that have transformed local practice.
