  • Research summary

The progression of myopia (near-sightedness worldwide), is becoming an epidemic. The key health issues are that the higher the myopia the poorer the vision without correction and the greater are the risks of eye disease later in life. Several studies have shown that soft contact lenses with variable powers can slow the progression of myopia in children and adolescents, hence offering long term benefits. To slow down myopia, contact lenses must be worn most of the day; for this the contact lenses, while producing a range of powers to achieve the required optical effect, must also achieve good visual acceptance / quality of vision. To date there is only one CE marked contact lens marketed in the UK for the control of myopia progression MiSight® 1-day. Brien Holden Vision Institute (BHVI) at the University of New South Wales has developed a unique, proprietary, patented, multifocal CREST EDOF contact lens design to control myopia progression while achieving a high level of visual acceptance.\nThe rationale for the current study is to compare the visual acceptance and performance of the new contact lens CREST EDOF to that of the current commercial contact lens MiSight® 1-day to assess its potential benefits for myopic children and adolescents.\nThe study will be conducted at a single site in central London where up to 35 myopic adolescents (age 12 to 18 years) currently wearing contact lenses will be screened with a view that 31 will be enrolled and 28 will complete the study. The participants will wear in turn in a random fashion the two contact lens types for approximately 9 days each and will attend the clinic on three occasions. Vision and comfort will be measured and both the participants and investigators will be masked to avoid bias.\n
