Research summary
The proposed research project is aiming to use the strengths of the NIHR Biomedical Research Centre’s (BRC) Consent for Contact (C4C) Initiative at South London and Maudsley NHS (SLaM) and the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN) to examine for the first time, at population level, participant engagement with creative activities and the impact of participation in these activities on the wellbeing of people with specific mental health problems. Participants will be recruited with the use of the C4C register. The C4C register includes individuals who have used SLaM NHS mental health services and have given permission to be contacted to participate in future clinical research studies, without obligation to take part. Young people and adults who have provided C4C in the last 3 years will be approached via an SMS and email to participate in a short survey examining the impact of participation in creative activities on mental health and wellbeing. The study has three parts to which participants will consent independently. In Part A, we will pilot a short survey on the topic of participation in creative activities in the past two years, as well as more recently within the past four weeks. In Part B, we will seek consent to obtain three items of anonymised clinical information from the SLaM Clinical Records Interactive Search (CRIS) database to examine anonymised survey responses in relation to these clinical variables: 'most recent mental health diagnosis', 'total treatment length/time with services' and 'total number of inpatient admissions, if any'. In Part C, a subsample of individuals who endorse participation in artistic activities in the past two years will be invited to participate in an online creative workshop exploring reflections on the effect of participation in artistic activities on the enhancement of wellbeing and prevention of mental health difficulties relapse.
