  • Research summary

    Created Out of Mind is a study investigating the relationships between people living with dementia and their interaction with the Arts. Led by the Dementia Research Centre, UCL, the study is based at the Hub at Wellcome Collection (5th Floor, 183 Euston Road, London), and funded by the Wellcome Trust from 2016-2018. The project team is made up of individuals from a range of disciplines, including researchers, clinicians, artists, computer scientists and people with dementia.

    The project aims are threefold:
    (i) Develop methods and toolkits for evaluating the experience of people with dementia involved in artistic activities (the value to the participant, both ‘in the moment’ and after the fact measures) and the quality of those artistic activities (the value of the input);
    (ii) Improve our understanding of the brain through the changing artistic experiences of those living with dementia. Artistic change in neurodegenerative conditions provides powerful insights into the brain mechanisms underpinning specific art forms, as well as more general cultural attributes such as creativity and aesthetics; and
    (iii) Shape public and professional perceptions of dementia through integrated artistic and scientific investigation of less recognised symptoms associated with typical and rare dementias.

    We aim to explore these aims using two project themes:

    i). People and Perceptions: Exploring the experiences of people living with a diagnosis of dementia and their support network of family, friends, and care staff. This part of the study involves interviewing and recording participants’ responses using audiovisual devices.

    ii). In the Moment: Exploring the experiences of people living with a diagnosis of dementia and their support network before, during, and after engaging in a creative activity. This part of the study involves measuring physiological responses.
