  • Research summary

New technologies such as tablet computers have the potential to revolutionise access to information and education for children and young people with low vision and blindness. Better education allows children/young people with low vision/blindness to lead an independent life, which means that not only are they not an economic burden to society, but on the contrary can fully participate and contribute. A thorough evaluation is needed to assess the impact of these technologies, but rigorous research is rare in the field of paediatric low vision technology. We propose to carry out an exploratory trial to evaluate iPads and a novel low-vision software and to measure their impact on children’s learning and independent access to information, using recognised measures of reading accuracy, comprehension and speed, and asking children/young people and their teachers about the impact of these technologies on their education and quality of life.
