Research summary
Often the difficulty in comparing different research studies in the same field of medicine or surgery is that what is measured varies hugely. This is the same in the cranioplasty literature and comparing one study to the next becomes challenging.
The Core Outcome Set (COS) project is a 2 phase project that is aimed to form a standardized set of outcome measures that all future studies can follow, which will enable for clearer comparison of future trials or studies.
The first phase (this application) is for the collection of current outcome measures. This is done through a qualitative study aiming to interview various groups of healthcare professionals and patients who are or have been involved in the cranioplasty process. I will ask them what they feel would be important to measure, thus forming a comprehensive list of all outcomes. This, along with a systematic review of the current literature will then formulate the final list that will be taken forward to phase 2 of the study, where participants will be asked to rank outcomes based on their importance to them - this is known as a Delphi Study. This process will then result in a final Core Outcome Set of outcome domains for cranioplasty.REC name
