  • Research summary

A mixed-methods design to research the value of the professional services provided by community pharmacies as perceived and experienced by service users, community pharmacy staff and any healthcare professionals (HCP) involved in referrals. Community pharmacies (n=8) in Scotland will be invited to participate by distributing study packs to service users. Each pack will contain an information sheet, questionnaire, and pre-paid return envelope. Questionnaire items will collect data on perceived quality of consultation in community pharmacy, perceptions of effectiveness of treatment and advice given, GP or other HCP visits potentially avoided, overall experience. Minimum response rate required of these questionnaires is 50 for each community pharmacy due to the requirements of the validated assessment tool (Consultation and Relational Empathy Measure; CARE).
Questionnaire respondents will have the opportunity of participating in a semi-structured telephone interview. Those who indicate interest to take part will be sent an information sheet for these interviews and will be purposively selected based on criteria, e.g. accessing the service out of normal hours, receiving advice only, and referrals. Of those patients who are referred to another service, i.e. GP and other HCPs, an information sheet for invite to interview will be provided to the patient to give to the referred HCP. These interviews will also be semi-structured and will explore the perceived effectiveness and appropriateness of the referral from the perspective of the HCP. Pharmacy staff will also be interviewed to provide the internal perspectives of structures and processes.
To capture the provision of advice only, each participating community pharmacy will be provided with a standalone scanner that can be used to scan provided bar-code sheets created to indicate the staff member, duration and general content of advice given.
