  • Research summary

Cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) is a diagnostic test that measures exercise capacity and the response of the heart and lungs. This test is used for patients under investigation for cardiac or respiratory conditions.

CPET interpretation is currently not standardised, and a scoring system has not yet been designed to be used for multiple conditions. Therefore, this project aims to design a CPET score that can be used for respiratory, and cardiac patients.

This project has three parts: designing the CPET score, testing the CPET score, and exploring factors that could affect the CPET score. Designing the CPET score involves identifying which CPET results will be included in the score. Testing the CPET score involves calculating the score from anonymised patient data from Royal Berkshire Hospital.

Also, the CPET score system will be tested across various staffing groups to see if the same score is calculated by individuals with different levels of experience. The survey that will be sent to the healthcare professionals will include CPET case studies and they will be asked to use the CPET scoring system to calculate a score.

The benefit of a versatile scoring system will standardise the approach across services, and it may help reduce waiting times for further diagnostic testing and therefore, a diagnosis and treatment for the patient. Thus, benefiting the NHS by reducing cost and benefiting the patient by establishing an earlier treatment plan and reducing the number of times they need to attend hospital for diagnostic testing.
