  • Data collection arrangements

Data from patients undergoing a cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET) either prior to major abdominal surgery or for routine assessment as an adult congenital heart patient are collected currently by the CPET team in a clinical database which is used by clinical teams to guide patient care.

All identifiable patient data will be anonymised according to the ICO code of practice to form the research database. The data will be stored and accessed securely from an NHS network and identifiable patient data will be anonymised prior to investigating the outcomes.

  • Research programme

Data based on the performance of the CPET test will be used to build risk models for predicting surgical risks for patients undergoing major abdominal surgery, bone marrow transplant or future cardiology intervention. The information generated will help inform patients and doctors who have to make difficult decisions regarding treatment choice and timing in the future.
