Research summary
With the growing number of people living with diabetes and the increasing strain on healthcare services, community pharmacists are well situated to offer their complementary expertise and become a greater part of the care pathway for those with diabetes.
Community pharmacy interventions in diabetes and other long-term conditions have proven to be acceptable to those taking part and capable of delivering improved health outcomes. Whilst current evidence supports increased integration of pharmacists into the care pathway for those with diabetes, no studies have been published specifically looking at the role of pharmacists in supporting those with diabetes who are struggling to engage with services currently available to them or who have sub-optimal glucose control.
We would like to design and develop a manual for a community pharmacy support service targeted at those with diabetes who regularly miss their diabetes healthcare appointments or who have sub-optimal glucose control. Evidence has shown that these individuals are at heightened risk of complications from their diabetes, and as such, may be most at need.
To help inform the design of the proposed service, we would like to understand the views of those with diabetes who the intervention will be designed for, healthcare professionals currently involved in the care pathway of those with diabetes and community pharmacists who we intend will be delivering the service. To do this, we plan to run small group discussions and one to one interviews with these three groups. Information gathered from these discussions will help inform and strengthen the design of the proposed community pharmacy service, helping it to be successful, accepted by those involved and capable of delivering improved health outcomes for those with diabetes who may be most in need.
