Research summary
The study will develop a new clinical tool which can predict, using routinely collected observations for individual patients, in sufficient time, clinical deterioration from COVID-19 disease, including the need for critical care support. This will enable clinicians to project whether patients are in the near future likely to require high level support, specifically continuous positive airways pressure or mechanical ventilation.
Such individual forecasts will allow earlier clinical intervention, and thus potentially could improve clinical outcomes. Such forecasts would also enable timely consideration of escalation status as appropriate to the patient, and potentially could aid recruitment to clinical trials of novel therapeutic interventions, such as specific anti-viral or anti-inflammatory agents.
