Research summary
PTSD symptoms following a traumatic child birth are estimated to affect between 14,000-20,000 mothers per year, however research into this area, particularly involving partners is limited. Further in depth research in this area will support the development of specialist perinatal mental health services to support mothers and their partners, which in turn will promote the long term wellbeing of parents and their children. The current study aims to understand couples’ experiences of recovery from trauma symptoms following traumatic child birth using qualitative methodology. Couples with at least one member under the care of primary or secondary mental health care following a traumatic childbirth between 6 months and 2 years ago will be interviewed together. Researchers will ask the couple questions pertaining to their experience of psychological symptoms of trauma, decision to seek help, and helpful or unhelpful sources of support they received during this period. Attention will be paid to the similarities and differences within couples in their experience of recovery, and data will be analysed using Interpretative Phenomonological Approach (IPA).
