Research summary
We want to see what role counselling could have in a care home. A fully trained counsellor will be paired with a care home and available each week to provide counselling to residents and support and training to members of the care team. Working with the care team, we will identify and recruit up to six residents in each home to receive counselling. Residents who participate will meet with the counsellor on a regular basis in a private room in the care home. Participants will be asked to complete, or supported to complete, a standard measure of depression and a measure of quality of life (The Geriatric Depression Scale and the EQ-5D-5L) before they start counselling and again at the end of counselling.
Members of the care team who participate will be asked to complete a measure of job-related stress at the start and end of the study. All participants, including the care home manager and the counsellors will be invited to take part in a research interview about how counselling fit within the care home.
We will also gather information about recruitment and processes which will help inform the development of a larger study around the feasibility of counselling in care homes.REC name
