Research summary
Summary of Research
This is a simple study to image a layer of the eye called the cornea. This layer is transparent largely due to cells on the back surface which keep it dehydrated. These cells (endothelial cells) can be visualised using a camera in the clinic in adults and older children but because it requires patients to stay very still, it cannot be used for younger children. For this reason, the details of these cells in adults are well known and are critical to the management of many eye diseases and dictate surgical methods and timing of surgery for many disorders. However, there is very limited knowledge of the normal development of these cells in children despite us performing many surgeries which are likely to damage their function.
In this project we will use the equipment suitable for adults, in younger children whilst they are under general anaesthetic prior to surgery for a variety of conditions. As the children are under anaesthetic we are able to capture images whilst they are still. This will allow us to understand the normal development of this important structure of the eye in addition to observing the effect of our regular surgical procedures and will inform future surgical techniques. As children become old enough to co-operate with the equipment in the clinic, we will use this standard method of measurement.Summary of Results
