  • Research summary

Hypodontia is a condition where you do not develop all of your adult teeth. This is highly variable between different individuals. Different teeth may be affected and different numbers of teeth may be affected. The management of hypodontia involves many different types of dentists, different types of treatment and can take a long period of time to complete.

There has been some research into hypodontia care but there are some gaps in our knowledge. In particular, how the effect of having hypodontia changes during the individual’s treatment and the longer-term benefit of the treatments. This is done by measuring patient-reported outcomes, which are descriptions by the patient of how a condition and its treatment affects their quality of life. This is becoming ever more important as we strive to find treatments that benefit the patient and measure what is important to them.

The research that exists at present for hypodontia care has different approaches and measurements, his makes it difficult to compare and combine all the information we have.

To overcome these problems this team of researchers are developing Core Outcome Set. This is a list of patient-reported outcomes which should be reported as a minimum in all studies for a specific health condition. This means future studies should be easier to compare and combine to provide better research results. Being able to combine this information allows researchers to understand how a condition affects someone, how much a treatment can help and which treatments work best. This means we can change the way we deliver care to provide better results for patients.
