Research summary
Psoriasis is a chronic disease of the skin which affects approximately 2 to 3% of the population. The presentation of psoriasis varies as does treatment offered to affected patients. Of the patients receiving treatment, 90% are managed in primary care, usually being treated with topical therapy alone. It has been previously documented that many patients may be dissatisfied with the apparent limited choice of treatment. Indeed, there is a wide range of therapy for psoriasis that patients would benefit from and would like to be informed about.
Psoriasis is also associated with several other comorbidities, including psoriatic arthritis (inflammation of joints), cardiovascular disease and psychosocial impact. Certain clinical presentations of psoriasis may represent an increased risk of these comorbidities. For example, psoriasis affecting the nail, scalp and natal cleft is strongly associated with psoriatic arthritis.
This study will describe the patterns of psoriasis in a primary care setting and the impact of psoriasis on patients. Specifically we will describe the patient pathway and explore the contrast with secondary care services.
Weekly research clinics will be run within the community (usually GP Practices) over a two year period. Psoriasis patients that provide informed consent will be asked to attend one research clinic. During the visit, patients will undergo their routine clinical assessment and be asked to complete a number of questionnaires. Data will be collected and stored securely on paper and electronically. Electronic data will be stored on Leeds Teaching Hospital servers.
