  • Research summary

The primary objective of the research project is to evaluate a Coping with Stroke psycho-education group. We will examine the feasibility, acceptability and effectiveness of group attendance on patient mood, coping, psychological acceptance and motivation. Pre- and post-intervention data along with two month telephone follow up data will be collected. Data on attendance, attrition and qualitative feedback will also be collected as an indication of acceptability. Should the findings of the project prove to be positive, it is hoped that the groups could become standard practice across NHS GGC stroke care. \nThe evaluation is planned across two sites: Stobhill Ward C and Queen Elizabeth University Hospital (QEUH) Langlands Ward 56/57. The group psycho-education programme will cover four key topics, with patient workbooks and handouts provided: Understanding stroke and the role of rehabilitation; Understanding and coping with cognitive changes after stroke; Understanding and coping with the emotional impact of stroke; Moving forward: ‘a new normal.’ Two Clinical Psychologists based at Stobhill ACH Ward C and QEUH Langlands Ward 56/57 will deliver the intervention. Pre and Post Group Questionnaire Measures of patient mood, ability to cope with stroke related stress and progress toward valued living post-stroke will be introduced, and a two month telephone follow up will also be completed. Patient and therapist rating of patient motivation for therapy will also be recorded. Results will be published in a peer reviewed journal to inform the national/international stroke psychology community and presented at a scientific conference. \n
