Research summary
This study is aiming to understand how occupational therapists communicate with their service users, in particular how they encourage service users to carry out activities that they might not otherwise do. Are there words that the therapist uses, or things that they do, which lead to service users being more active?
I will be video-recording up to 12 naturally occurring meetings between occupational therapists and their service users in the community, where the focus of the meeting is on activity engagement. These recordings will be transcribed and analysed using conversation analysis, which is a systematic and structural approach to explain how action is achieved through conversation in everyday life (Bryman, 2016).
Then, I will transcribe recordings using accepted conventions in the field of conversation analysis, the findings of which can potentially illuminate patterns in the interactions that impact the service user’s engagement and/or performance in mutually desired activities.
