Research summary
An Intracranial aneurysms (IA) is caused by a weakness in the wall of a cerebral artery (an artery in the head) which leads to outward bulging or ballooning of the blood vessel. This portion of the blood vessel that has bulged becomes thin and, if left untreated, the aneurysm can rupture. IAs that rupture, cause a condition known as subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) which can cause serious complications. Aneurysms are usually treated by placing coils into the aneurysm through a small tube or catheter inside the artery which avoids the need for open surgery. This research is designed to test a new device, Contour Neurovascular System™ which may help to improve the current treatment success rate.
