    Continuous glucose monitoring is a sensor, which monitors glucose levels continuously throughout the day. In people with diabetes, especially those treated with insulin, this sensor helps guide the amount of treatment (such as insulin) required to maintain glucose within target.

    In dialysis, the glucose levels and insulin needs can change a lot because of the kidney failure and dialysis treatments.

    In this study, we aim to look at the changes in glucose during and in between dialysis sessions by using continuous glucose monitoring. We will explore whether there is a relationship between the trend of the glucose and fluid level changes during and in between dialysis treatments. Also, we aim to look at whether there is a relationship between glucose levels and other long-term parameters, such as admissions to the hospital.

    People who have diabetes, receive dialysis treatment, and have a continuous glucose monitor (or they are eligible for one) are eligible for this study. Participants will be recruited from the Renal Unit, University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust. This would cover two sites, the Royal Derby Hospital and Lichfield sites.

    After informed consent is signed by participants, we will ask participants some questions about their health and medical history. We will collect information from their glucose monitor and dialysis notes, and collect the results from the blood tests they routinely get on dialysis in addition to weight, body composition and blood pressure measurements. All visits will take place during the participants’ dialysis sessions (7 visits in total If they receive hospital dialysis). After the initial 7 visits, we will review their case notes/records and health information for up to 5 years, but participants will not need to attend any further study visits for this.
