  • Research summary

Contingency management is behavioural intervention that rewards individuals for a specific positive behaviour. This study aims to assess the feasibility of conducting a future larger study on the ability of contingency management to promote treatment attendance in patients with alcohol-related liver disease. By motivating attendance to treatment, including liver, addiction and psychosocial medical support, it is expected that alcohol harm is reduced, improving overall health and preventing future re-admissions.
Following study enrolment, participants will be either assigned to standard care only (control group) or standard care with contingency management (intervention group). For this study, we will be using Love2Shop vouchers (between £10 and £30) to a total of £120 over 3 months.
An initial qualitative interview will allow to understand previous treatment experience, factors affecting attendance to treatment, aspects contributing to successful uptake of a new intervention, and CM views. These will also be assessed at follow-up, allowing to better understand how services can meet patient needs. The replicability of the study into a larger scale study will be informed by feasibility and acceptability measurements.
The design of this research accounts for input from members of the public, including service users and people with lived experience.
