Research summary
Care home residents are at a high risk of falling. Supporting falls management programmes in care homes can be challenging due to the complexity of residents needs, the care home environment and the influence of the wider health and social system. A recent review of the literature suggested that further work is needed to explore approaches to falls management that focus on staff and the organisational systems of care homes.
A programme of research is underway that aims to develop a new way of working with staff and organisational systems to support the implementation of falls management in care homes. The research follows an implementation science approach and the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research will be used to help structure the work. The first stage of the work was to determine the key parts that need to be included in falls management programmes in care homes and explore how to evaluate if the implementation of a programme is successful. This is being done by reviewing existing literature and by asking experts for their views.
The next stage (which is this research) is to explore the contextual issues relating to staff and the organisational systems in delivering falls management in care homes. This will be done through non-participant observations and semi-structured interviews and is the component of the research detailed in this protocol.
After determining the core components to be implemented and then exploring the context in which they will be delivered, a new model for implementation will be co-produced and then tested in a series of case study care homes.REC name
