  • Research summary

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the content validity of a newly developed Patient Reported Outcome Measure (PROM) in people living with stroke in an area of South Wales.
Patient reported outcome measures (PROMs) measure the health- related quality of life (HRQoL) of people living with conditions such as stroke. A newly developed PROM is currently being piloted by stroke services in Wales as part of a stroke care evaluation and improvement strategy. It is necessary to ensure the PROM sufficiently encapsulates the aspects of HRQoL impacted by stroke from the perspectives of people living with stroke and the healthcare professionals providing stroke care. This will enable stroke service providers in Wales to use the analysis of the PROMs data to make decisions about future stroke care based on accurate, relevant information.
The study will take place over a period of ten months and be located within the Aneurin Bevan University Health Board in South Wales. It will be carried out with a group of people living in the community 6 months after a stroke, their carers and healthcare professionals working with stroke patients (total 25 participants).
Interviews will be carried out by the researcher with the people living with stroke and their carers in their own homes. They will be asked to complete the PROM and give their views on the relevance of the questionnaire to their experience of living with stroke, and the ease of understanding and answering the questions. The healthcare professionals will complete a survey seeking their views on the relevance of the PROM content to the HRQoL in people living with stroke.
The data will be analysed by the researcher and the findings of the study will inform the Welsh NHS stroke care improvement strategy.
