Research summary
This study aims to investigate if constructions of masculinity create barriers for army veterans when accessing care. Through exploring the discourse used by veterans, in regards to the process of accessing care, and the relationship between the discourses available to them and the constraints these create, services can be better informed as to difficulties that may be experienced for veterans when accessing care and hopefully better inform practice. This study will be conducted using semi-structured interviews to explore the constructions of masculinity that are held by these veterans, and the influence these have on the process of accessing mental health services. Through employing Foucauldian discourse analysis, the role of power and constructions of masculinity will be explored in the discourse that is used by veterans when discussing their access to services. Participants will be male veterans aged 24 and under who are currently accessing the Yorkshire & Humber Veterans’ Outreach Service and have served in the Regular Army.
