Research summary
Cardiac diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging is a non-invasive technique for assessing the heart muscle's microstructural details by examining the diffusion of water molecules. However, some limitations include cardiac and respiratory motion, strain, and perfusion sensitivity to the diffusion technique. We aim to establish to tackle the challenges by using a bespoke MR system (i.e., the Connectom scanner), which is 4-8 times stronger than the ones currently available on clinical routine scanners and, as such, able to achieve significant resolution. Our goal is to characterize microstructural details changes in patients' hearts and detect more accurate cardiac tissue remodelling in diseased hearts (hypertrophic cardiomyopathy – HCM) in comparison with health volunteers' and athletes' hearts.
