Research summary
Can contingency management for gambling work in the UK?
Disordered gambling is a growing international public health concern. Despite the availability of various psychological interventions for gambling, people who have problems with gambling often drop out of treatment and relapse is common.
Contingency management (CM) is a behavioural therapy and is effective at promoting behaviour change in a wide range of areas such as substance use disorders, smoking cessation and weight loss. In substance abuse, incentives in the form of shopping vouchers, provided for drug-negative urine samples, readily increase the future likelihood of drug abstinence and treatment retention. Little is known about the effectiveness of CM for disordered gambling (CONGAM).
This research study is funded by GambleAware and is part of a series of studies to address the above aim. The specific aim of the present study is to understand gambling treatment service clients views about CONGAM.With the help of gambling treatment providers in Wales and England, we will recruit two hundred service users or people seeking treatment for gambling. We will conduct interviews with the first 30 participants lasting up to an hour and a half (via online video-conferencing). We will ask about the persons' views and they will complete structured questionnaires about specific beliefs and attitudes towards CM. We will conduct an online or paper survey with the remaining 170 participants, lasting forty minutes.
We will use the findings of the study to inform a later study where we plan to implement CONGAM in a UK treatment setting.
