  • Research summary

This research is exploring patient and hearing healthcare clinician’s views on self-management of hearing loss. This means identifying what skill-set and mind-set an individual requires to manage their hearing loss on a day to day basis. \nIt is important to study this as prevalence of hearing loss is increasing as is the annual cost of hearing healthcare in the UK. If patients are well equipped on managing their hearing loss, it will improve patient outcomes and decrease the burden on the health service. \nIndividuals aged 18 and over with a hearing loss are eligible for this study. A second group of participants will be hearing healthcare clinicians from the NHS. The participants will be asked to take part in two focus groups, each lasting up to 1.5 hours. \nThe first task involves the participants taking part in a group discussion where they will be asked to generate statements to describe their understanding of how people self-manage hearing loss. \nIn the second task, the participants will be presented with the set of statements that were generated in the first task. They will be asked to group them based on similarity. Once all of the statements have been grouped. Each statement within the groups will be scored based on their perceived importance for people to self-manage their hearing loss. Participants will be using the Likert Scale where 5 is very important and 1 is not important at all. \n
