Research summary
Cystic fibrosis is a chronic, life-limiting multisystem disease. Median age of survival is increasing each year. Patients with cystic fibrosis may encounter further complexities of their illness as they age. Some of this disease burden may not be typically found in younger people. The aim of this project is to investigate the overall demographics of cystic fibrosis patients over 40 years of age in the Manchester Unit, as well as the prevalence and clinical impact of cardiovascular disease, renal function and hearing loss. Recurrent use of intravenous and nebulised antibiotics in CF, amongst other things, are thought to contribute to renal disease and hearing loss. In CF patients, onset of cardiovascular disease may be at an earlier age than the general population, and non-atherosclerotic factors may be implicated. One of these factors may be increased vascular stiffness. This is associated with chronic inflammation, diabetes and renal disease, all highly relevant in CF patients. I will therefore also investigate vascular stiffness parameters of blood vessels in a select cohort of CF patients, and will compare these measurements with a control group of non-CF patients. Psychosocial aspects of ageing in cystic fibrosis will also be examined using qualitative interviewing in a select number of patients, to gain insight into the perceptions of CF patients about life and ageing with CF.
