Research summary
This is a UK-based qualitative study exploring compassionate maternity care and what that means to a woman living with Female genital mutilation (FGM). Qualitative research methodology with be used to interpret the real-world experiences of a women who have experienced maternity care in the UK and are living with FGM. The research design will include an interview, so women can speak privately and openly about their experiences. The recruitment strategy will include purposive selection, this is due to the women being experts in their experiences and having the information required to answer the research question. The inclusion criteria for participants included in the study are women who have FGM, have accessed maternity care in the last 10 years, speak English and over 18 years old.
The chief investigator will initially approach midwives working in FGM clinics as they are the gatekeepers and can identify women to be part of the study. As this is a sensitive topic it is acknowledged that some women may not wish to take part. Due to the private nature of this interview, the participants can choose where they would like to be interviewed, such as their home, or a private room in the clinical area, over MS Teams or via WhatsApp voice notes. The interview will be recorded, and handwritten notes taken. A topic guide will be used to support the structure and focus of the interview. Appreciative inquiry (AI) will be used to formulate the topic guide, women are recruited to the study regardless of their maternity experience, therefore AI in formulating questions will enable the researcher to understand what compassionate maternity care means to the participant. the interview will be recorded on a Dictaphone and handwritten notes will be made. Interpretive phenological analysis (IPA) will be used to gain rich data.
