Research summary
Chronic cough is characterised by a long term troublesome cough with no known underlying pathology. Anecdotally these patients have a higher prevalence of hypertension than is found in the general population. We suspect that this
is linked to a dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system and that the cough itself may be a symptom of autonomic disturbance.Subjects who took part in COMPASS Phase 1 and consented to be contacted regarding phase 2 will be approached by the researcher. If the subjects is willing and suitable to take part in the study, they will attend the research unit in the North West Lung Centre where their demographics and medical history will be recorded. Their height and weight will be measured and their BMI calculated. Then they will be fitted with an ambulatory cough monitor and a Holter 24 hour ECG monitor which will record simultaneously. The subject will either be asked to return to the unit more than 24 hour after the start of the recording or the researcher will collect the devices form the participant.REC name
