Research summary
Candida and bacterial vaginosis (BV) infection may present with symptoms of vaginal discharge and genital irritation. The detection of these organisms involves a clinician examining the vagina, inserting an instrument and taking microbiological samples from the vagina which are tested in laboratories. However often women find this procedure embarrasing and General Practionaires may not have the time or appropriate instruments to perform the examination. This study is to investigate if patient self taken vaginal swab is as good as clinician taken high vaginal swab for the detection of candida and BV.
