Research summary
In assisted reproductive technology eggs and sperm are mixed together to create an embryo that is kept in a specific solution to develop for up to 6 days. This solution provides the required nutrients for development. It is important not only to determine which solutions are providing the best environment for good embryo development, but also for healthy live birth outcomes. The outcome of this project aims to help identify the best solution for this.
Furthermore, the use of a computer programme which helps embryologists de-select embryos for putting back in the female or freezing is being investigated in this project. Currently embryos are selected for this on how they look (their morphology). However, by looking at data to determine the scores given by the software and comparing it to their pregnancy outcome will help validate the use of this technique. The software uses time-lapse imaging and creates a video of the embryo over time. It scores the embryo/s by determining if they met the correct developmental stages at the appropriate times. This score can then be used as a de-selection tool alongside morphology. The results will be discussed as a laboratory team and decisions made regarding implementing changes.
