Research summary
This study aims to compare the effect of two types of knee replacement operations on a patient gait (or walking pattern). This could potentially be an important area for research as it may identify a superior method of knee replacement with regards to the way patients walk. This would allow practitioners to recommend one or the other procedure to a patient in terms of conserving a normal walking pattern.
Participants will be patients who have previously undergone a total knee replacement or hemi knee replacement at NHS Tayside hospitals.
The aim of the study is to compare patients who have had a hemi knee(half knee) replacement to those who had a total knee replacement patient. Their gait pattern (the way they walk)will be analysed between the two operation groups. This research question hopes to ascertain which operation type (if either) results in a normal gait pattern after surgery.
Participants who meet the criteria of having received a hemi/total knee replacement will be invited to attend the gait lab, at the TORT centre, Ninewells hospital where 20 reflective markers in total will be placed onto the pelvis and lower limbs and then they will be asked to walk as normal a short distance while the cameras capture the data. This should take 30 minutes to complete. This will be a once off visit to the lab.REC name
