Research summary
The aim of this study is to compare the levels of attachment loss on bitewing radiographs in non-smoking adult patients who have scored a BPE code 3 in accordance with the 1999 chronic periodontitis workshop classification. The levels of attachment loss will then be compared between age groups.
In order to achieve this aim’s all new patients attending the dental surgery of (S3 dental Hinchley Wood and S3 Dental Eltham) of the principal investigator (Oliver Barnes) for a ‘new patient examination’ will be given a Patient Information Leaflet (attached) on the research that has been proposed.
Participation will be totally anonymous and the information leaflet will explain to the patient what participating in this research will involve. The data collection will only begin after R and D approval, along with the relevant ethics approval, is obtained. The data will be recorded in a chart. Statistical tests will be performed on the collected data and it presented as a research paper for a MSc dissertation.
The data collected is clinical data. It is anonymous because the following steps will be taken: 1) no personal details will be recorded. 2) data that can be traced back to a patient will not be recorded 3) no radiographs will be recorded, only an interpretation of the radiographic result.
Furthermore, the patient information leaflet will be given to the patient before any data is recorded. It will be made clear that they can opt out of the research before any data is recorded.
The study is predicted to last 3 months.
