  • Research summary

Research question: Which Endotracheal Tube (ETT) fixation method is a preferred technique by Intensive Care Nurses (ICU) : in relation to ease of use and general acceptability when comparing cotton tapes verses a commercial holder. ETT's are utilised to facilitate artificial ventilation. The ETT is placed in the mouth and down the trachea by a trained professional, tubing attached to a mechanical ventilator can then be attached to the ETT. The ETT is then secured in place to the mouth and face by either cotton, foam or adhesive tapes initially. If the ETT needs to remain in place for a longer period of time, for example ETT's are placed to perform certain functions such as, to provide an artificial airway to prevent obstruction, allow optimal ventilation, enable suctioning of secretions and prevent aspiration (da Silver & Fonseca, 2012), the tapes may be substituted for a commercial holder to secure and manage the ETT.
The aims of this study is to obtain ICU nurses opinions when comparing cotton tapes verses a commercial holder, post a trial of a new commercial holder on the ICU. The study will evaluate principle areas relating to ETT fixation and nursing methods these will include: Ease of fitting the device/method initially.
Ease of changing the position of the device/method once in place to prevent pressure injury and security of the method/device.
Time taken to fit and reposition the device/method.
    Patient comfort/fit of the device/method.
Ease to perform mouthcare for patient comfort and prevention of infections.
The study will adopt a quantitative approach utilising a self-completed structured questionnaire. The results will serve as a service evaluation post the trial of the holder. The ICU is in the minority of its current use of cotton tapes, majority of neighbouring ICU's use holders, for pressure injury prevention, ability to provide mouthcare, prevent infections and general patient comfort.
