Research summary
The project will be testing/validating an American tool in the UK, where community pharmacies will be screening for worsening heart failure symptoms. Two groups of participants will be included:
1. existing heart failure patients, presenting with worsening heart failure symptoms.
2. patients predisposed at developing heart failure (undiagnosed heart failure). The tool will be administered by the pharmacist with these 2 groups, and includes questions relating to typical heart failure symptoms. The community pharmacist will inform the investigator of any patients with suspected / worsening heart failure symptoms. The investigator will subsequently access the patients' local district general hospital (Wrexham Maelor hospital) medical notes to determine whether they have an existing heart failure diagnosis (confirmed by echocardiographic investigation) and then liaise with the patient's GP to discuss investigations and possible treatment options. The investigator will monitor the outcome of any patients's that was consequently referred to a cardiologist or echocardiogram. This information will be used to establish the clinical outcome value of the screening tool.
