  • Research summary

The proposed study uses a mixed method approach to explore the feasibility of pharmacist behaviour change counselling (BCC) to support weight loss. The setting is one community pharmacy in Dartford, Kent. The study uses a pharmacist previously trained in BCC (LJ). A Poster will be designed to advertise the study and promote recruitment. This will be displayed in the pharmacy. The pharmacist will approach people who visit the pharmacy or who are identified through Medicines Use Review who express interest in weight loss. The aim is to recruit at least 20 participants in 2 months.

The recruitment period will be timed to start immediately after New Year. Participants must be aged 20-75, with a BMI > 25, not be undertaking any other formal weight management programme. Patient consent will be gained by the pharmacist at the time of recruitment. An initial consultation will be arranged at which consenting participants will be asked to complete a demographic questionnaire, be weighed and waist circumference measured and complete the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) and trained in the use of an accelerometer. They will be asked to record / monitor activity one week prior to delivery of each intervention session. The participant will see the pharmacist for up to 5 intervention sessions of BCC, at 1 week, 2 weeks, 4 weeks and 8 weeks after the baseline consultation. Intervention is BCC focused on dietary calorie restriction and increased physical activity as dictated by individual participants needs/preferences. At each session participants will be weighed and waist circumference recorded. Follow up: 3 months post recruitment, 6 months post recruitment for weight, waist circumference, download of accelerometer data for the 7 days prior to the follow-up and IPAQ.
Face to face interviews will be conducted with some participants to gather their feedback on taking part in the study.
