Research summary
The project 'Communication Skills in people with Multiple Sclerosis' (MS) aims to establish the range and nature of communication symptoms in a group of people with MS. We will specifically focus on dysarthria (motor speech disorder) and anomia (word retrieval disorder) and assess the severity of each set of symptoms and evaluate the relationship between communication symptoms and general physical disability. Furthermore, with regard to anomia, we will analyse the nature of word retrieval symptoms in the context of wider cognitive and linguistic skills. The participants will be people with MS under the care of Dr David Rog, Consultant Neurologist from Salford Royal Foundation Trust (SRFT) where the communication assessment of the patients will be carried out. The data collected will be analysed at University of Manchester. The study is part of an MPhil research degree over 12 months. We aim to recruit up to 100 people with MS between January and April 2016 and conduct a brief behavioural assessment of speech and language skills, taking up to 40 minutes of face-to-face testing with each participant.
