Research summary
For differnet reasons, both young children with MSI (Multisensory Impairments) and children with ASD (Autistic Spectrum Disorders) have severe difficulties in communication.
This study aims to compare the communication and sensory profiles of young children with MSI and children with ASD in order to identify specific markers/ /associations of observed behaviors that can help to distinguish the preverbal communication characteristics of each group.
The project will recruit 20 families (10 in each group) of children between 2 and 6 years of age. All children will have already been seen by professionals (before their participation in this study) and have either an ASD diagnosis (ASD group) or a MSI diagnosis only. Children will be assessed with a set of observational tools, including parental reports and direct observations of child/parent interactions in a semi-structured free-play situation (for 10 min).
The project is commissioned by Sense (the main UK charity for deafblind people) and will be carried out in partnership with NAS (the National Autistic Society) in the course of 1 year.
