Research summary
This study uses a participatory research design to explore how people with diabetes experience communicating with clinicians about food, weight and disordered eating. Through this, the study also aims to co-produce new communication guidelines for diabetes clinicians that take patients’ lived experiences into account. This study is the first of its kind: despite the prevalence of eating disorders among people with diabetes and the demonstrated importance of language in diabetes treatment, little is known about how people with diabetes experience communication with diabetes clinicians in relation to food, weight, and disordered eating. Moreover, while researchers and practitioners recognise that patient-led insights are key to improving diabetes communication, to date, no study has engaged people with lived experience to guide clinical communication practices focused on diabetes and disordered eating. In the proposed study, we will address both gaps.
