Data collection arrangements
Samples collected as part of routine care will include blood samples (venous, capillary), genital secretions, sputum, saliva, gingival crevicular fluid (oral fluid from the gum line), nose and throat swabs, urine, pleural fluid, pleural biopsies, pericardial fluid, ascitic fluid, cerebrospinal fluid, bronchoalveolar lavage specimens, and tissue biopsies.
Samples donated by healthy controls (not affected by a communicable disease) will be limited to blood samples, plus samples that are routinely self-taken including capillary blood, saliva, skin swabs and urine.
All tissue samples that are prospectively stored within the bank will be collected only after written informed consent has been granted by the donor. The samples may have been taken during the routine care of patients for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. Alternatively they may have been donated specifically for the purposes of the research programme linked to this tissue bank. In such cases this would have been explicitly stated to the donor. Consent is explicitly obtained for the provision of relevant clinical data to be collected and that whilst the samples are anonymised
the code enables linkage to clinical data for the purposes of the research.
The Tissue Bank is housed in the Imperial College Faculty of Medicine laboratories at South Kensington Campus (Sir Alexander Fleming Building) and Chelsea and Westminster hospital.Research programme
The mission of the tissue bank is to support research into Communicable Diseases and to be responsive to new challenges through the collection, curation and provision to qualified researchers of a range of clinical materials.
